Chapter Twelve

SAKIMA

Two days after Sakima and Vance shared their darkest moments with each other, Sakima led Tanner across the empty expanse of Elysium’s dance floor to the back hallway. Setting up the meeting during the day, when the club was closed, was the only way Sakima could ensure the encounter wouldn’t be reported back to Arden. Over the past several nights, the club had shown an increase in vampire patrons. The Alpha remained silent until the door of Sakima’s office was closed. In the confined space of the room, Sakima could feel the power pulsing through the wolf shifter’s veins with every heartbeat.

The hum was easily missed when Tanner was among his pack and blended in with those who rightfully wielded the abilities, but when he was alone, his power was quite noticeable. The danger this young man presented as he stood now was enough to give Sakima pause, especially after his conversation with Arden a few days prior. Adding his own vampiric speed and strength to the abilities already swirling within Tanner would be foolish. Sakima would need to be very careful in his mating to Vance.

“You requested my presence,” Tanner said. “Why?”

“Your power combined with your ignorance is dangerous, and we need to rectify that.”

“I’m not as naïve as you think.” The words were spoken calmly, conversationally. Tanner didn’t appear insulted or defensive, which was unusual for Alpha wolves in Sakima’s experience. “I am aware there are things I don’t know, or understand, but I’m learning. Luca and Deacon are helping.”

Sakima huffed as he took a seat behind his desk. The fact the Alpha wolf was at least aware of his limitations and already taking steps to improve them would make this conversation much easier.

“Do you know your place in the hierarchy of the paranormal world?” Sakima asked.

Tanner sat in the chair opposite him. “I’m Alpha to a wolf pack…that also has a dragon and an Elemental in it.” Tanner stared directly into Sakima’s eyes. “And a vampire.”

“All true,” Sakima acknowledged, though he believed Tanner’s inclusion of him in the pack was still premature. “But you misunderstood the question and that misunderstanding is exactly why I asked you here today. Paranormal power is all well and good in a fight, but knowledge is the power that will keep you from having to fight in the first place. Right now, you are lacking the knowledge to keep your pack, and my companion, safe. I won’t have you march your pack into a fight that may kill Vance simply because you didn’t know you were outnumbered and underpowered.”

Sakima felt his emotions bleed into his words. His concern for Vance’s safety would be damn clear to anyone. Tanner grinned at the vehemence, but then sobered and nodded.

“Teach me,” he said.

Sakima let out a satisfied sigh and relaxed into his chair. Tanner might be ignorant of certain things, but he wasn’t a stupid young man.

“When I refer to the hierarchy of the paranormal world, I’m talking about every paranormal species inhabiting the planet and where each falls along the spectrum of power.
